<dcterms:description><![CDATA[At twenty feet long and only one foot tall, the Peutinger Table provides an intriguing view of the Roman world. Stretching over eleven segments (the eighth of which appears in the thumbnail, showing Constantinople and the mouth of the Nile), from Great Britain and the Iberian Peninsula on the left to India on the right, the Mediterranean world features prominently with Rome close to the center of the map. The Mediterranean Sea itself has been flattened to allow the mapmaker to fit the land of Europe and North Africa into such a narrow space. Its strange proportions, coupled with its meticulous labeling of land masses, roads, rivers and towns, leads to a map that is both fascinating and difficult to categorize. Although all that exists now are medieval copies, the original Roman map (possibly dating to the fifth century) likely was mounted on a wall, showcasing the extent of the Empire.
